Artist - Part 2 - Drawing with The Drawing Circle
I am treasurer of a local drawing group “The Drawing Circle”. I have been apart of it for about 15 years but the Circle has been around for a long time before that. The interesting thing about our group is we range from novice to classically trained, and the only thing that brings us together is the common need to draw the human form. For eight years in the ‘90s it was the only fine art I did, mostly incomplete studies. But it kept the art in me alive until I found direction and started understanding what being an artist meant. (the picture is of the studio at the Art Gallery of Sudbury where we draw twice a month)
One of the greatest things about being an artist is the people you meet. The vast majority are awesomely nice. I use that yard stick to judge people I deal with every day.
Well, back to drawing… I had four years of life painting and drawing back in college. The poses were quite long, the shortest being 3 hours and the longest, around 21 hours, spread over three day-long sessions. I find the human form by itself, quite boring without the proper lighting. In most cases I’d rather do a portrait.
We draw the nude form twice a month at the Drawing Circle and I work mostly for practice. My more serious work is done in my tiny studio, but once in a while I do a piece that I like, and keep it. Most of the life drawing on my website was done in the Drawing Circle.
